Many Lawrence County residents are Amish in spirit, because we share their love of religion, family, community and land. There are around 100 Amish families in the area with an average of six members per household. That’s the largest settlement of Old Order Amish in the South. Old Order is the most conservative branch of the Amish sect. That means no electricity, running water or gas engines, and no photos of the Amish if you visit, please. The community is a blessing for Lawrence County, providing handmade, artisan-quality products and homegrown produce for sale throughout the year. If you’d like to plan a visit to Amish Country, visit our tourism site.
