Last week, Lawrence County proudly observed Manufacturing Week, a time to celebrate the tremendous impact of manufacturing on our community— past, present, and in the years ahead. We kicked off the week with a Manufacturers Appreciation Breakfast on Tuesday morning and hosted two days of industry tours at some of the county’s manufacturing sites. Students, local government officials, members of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, the Chamber Board, Ambassadors, and Young Professionals had the opportunity to explore facilities at Graphic Packaging Inc., Blickman, Flexco, Craig Manufacturing, and Old South Wood. These tours provided an inside look into the heart of our local economy, offering a deeper appreciation for the work that keeps Lawrence County strong.
Present Impact: A Thriving Manufacturing Sector
Today, Lawrence County is home to 62 manufacturing companies that play a vital role in the local economy. These businesses provide more than 2,200 jobs locally. Manufacturing accounts for 20.5% of local employment, demonstrating its significance in household economies and overall economic stability. Many of these industries have been part of our community for decades, showing their confidence in the skills and dedication of our workforce. We are grateful for their continued investment in our county’s prosperity.
Today’s manufacturers face a rapidly evolving market that requires flexibility and technological expertise. They also play a critical role in shaping the future workforce, partnering with local schools, TCAT programs, and college institutions like the Southern Tennessee Higher Education Center. These collaborations help prepare the next generation of workers for the high-tech, skilled jobs that will sustain Lawrence County in the years to come.
The Future of Manufacturing: A Bright Horizon
Looking to the future, we can see Lawrence County’s manufacturing community expanding. A perfect example is Magna International, one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers, which will soon be adding local employees to its global workforce of 177,775. With 345 manufacturing operations and 105 product development centers in 28 countries, Magna’s arrival at Team Lawrence Park signifies a new chapter of growth for the county.
Additionally, a site northeast of Team Lawrence Park is being marketed to potential companies, further enhancing the county’s manufacturing sector. Our local workforce is already being trained for these future opportunities in our schools, TCAT programs, and higher education center. The jobs created by these new industries will continue to bolster Lawrence County’s economy and provide stability for local families.
Honoring the Legacy of Lawrence County’s Manufacturers
As we celebrate Manufacturing Week, it’s clear that the strength of our local economy lies in the hands of our manufacturers. They have been—and will continue to be—key drivers of Lawrence County’s growth and prosperity. Their commitment to innovation, investment in the local workforce, and support of community initiatives reflect their vital role in sustaining our county’s success.
We are excited about the future and grateful for the opportunities that manufacturing will continue to bring to Lawrence County, keeping our community strong for generations to come.
