Crockett Theatre
A carefully restored Art Deco cinema that opened with Baby Makes Three in September, 1950 is now a venue for live music, community theatre productions and recitals. “Presenting the epitome in modern Theatre design, the handsome new Davy Crockett Theatre formally opened to an enthusiastic public who marveled at the magnificence of the new movie palace,” a local newspaper reported.
Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Crockett Theatre is a publicly-owned gem that retains the magnificence of its youth. Plush seating for 1,265 includes a balcony section and wider, row-capping “big man seats” that were part of the original design. Terrazzo flooring remains in the lobby and bulbs in the refurbished marquee still pulse with excitement on premiere nights.
A system of dressing rooms built behind the stage served groups like The Singing Carter Family with Mother Maybelle, who performed there during their heyday. That inclusion in the design of what was primarily a cinema, however, seems prophetic given the facility’s new life as a performance venue.
Crockett Theatre’s superior acoustics have been praised by visiting performers that include Percy Sledge, Billy Joe Royal, John Conlee and Ronnie McDowell. The annual James D. Vaughan Quartet Festival brings the top names in gospel music to its stage in July. Productions by the Lawrenceburg Community Theatre feature local talent, as do dance recitals, school band performances, and community concerts.
The Crockett Theatre Performance Series brings a wide range of acts to the community each October through April. The Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Nashville Ballet, and Seven Bridges Eagles tribute band are only a few of those who have shared their talent from the Crockett Theatre stage.
